One Woman’s Life-changing Story: Making Decisions To Improve Her Health, Fitness And Appearance

Joanne Eddinger accomplished a major personal victory when she gradually lost more than 100 pounds. Eddinger, a nonprofit executive in College Grove, Tenn., knew the weight loss would leave her with excess skin; however, she did not anticipate the impact it would have on other areas of her body, like her breasts.

Eddinger’s new outlook on life inspired her to further improve her appearance-restoring her breast shape through breast augmentation surgery and a breast lift.

Eddinger’s story may be more common than we think. New research from the not-for-profit National Women’s Health Resource Center (NWHRC) shows that life-changing events, such as childbirth, weight loss or divorce, often change a woman’s mindset, inspiring a renewed focus on herself. This new outlook motivates many women to improve their health, fitness and, for 42 percent of women, physical appearance. Of those women motivated to improve their appearance, nearly half (45 percent) said they would consider plastic surgery to do so. These are a few findings of the Life Makeover Secrets of the Modern Woman survey, a national survey of women ages 18 to 64.

"My breasts are important to me as a woman and to my sense of femininity. For my life makeover, I regained control of my life and health by losing over 100 pounds. While I am proud of my accomplishment, I didn’t realize the impact it would have on the shape of my breasts. It was frustrating to work so hard to achieve the healthy body I had always wanted only to lose my feminine curves," says Eddinger. "I chose breast augmentation and a lift to restore the breast shape and volume that I had lost along with the weight. It was the right decision for me, and I feel more healthy and vibrant than ever before."

According to the survey, more than 90 percent of women cited the desire to reshape their breasts following a major physical change like weight loss or childbirth as the primary reason they may consider breast aesthetic surgery.

"The survey shows that women focus on themselves after life-changing events, which often leads to an increased consideration for medical aesthetic procedures to improve appearance," says Elizabeth Battaglino Cahill, executive vice president of the NWHRC. "During the past decade, we’ve seen the topic of plastic surgery-including breast aesthetics-become increasingly relevant for women. Therefore, it’s critical that we provide women the information and tools needed to make informed decisions."

The NWHRC survey specifically challenges stigmas and stereotypes associated with breast aesthetic surgery and the women who choose surgery. In fact, more than half of women surveyed (53 percent) are more accepting of breast augmentation surgery than they used to be and described women who undergo breast augmentation surgery as confident (60 percent) and feminine (61 percent). Women’s changing views may stem from personal experience, as 50 percent of women reported knowing someone who has had breast augmentation surgery.

breast augmentation storyRecent data from The American Society for Aesthetic Plastic Surgery (ASAPS) support the survey findings. In 2006, nearly 11.5 million cosmetic surgical and nonsurgical procedures were performed in the United States, an increase of 446 percent in the last decade. What’s more, breast augmentation surgery surpassed liposuction as the No. 1 surgical cosmetic procedure for women in 2006, with more than 380,000 procedures performed.

"The NWHRC survey results echo what I hear from patients in my practice. My typical breast aesthetic patient looks just like your sister, your neighbor or the school librarian. She’s well-educated, savvy and she has turned her attention back onto herself after years of taking care of everyone else," says Caroline Glicksman, M.D., a plastic surgeon in private practice in New Jersey. "The women who come into my practice to inquire about breast aesthetic surgery are generally looking to restore or enhance their breast shape, often after breastfeeding or surviving breast cancer, or to obtain a more proportionate body. Their decision is driven from within, as they are motivated to make a change for themselves rather than to please anyone else."

When considering breast aesthetic surgery, women should seek advice from a plastic surgeon to define realistic surgical goals and a plan for long-term breast health.

The Life Makeover Secrets of the Modern Woman national consumer survey and campaign are part of an NWHRC educational initiative, sponsored by Allergan, Inc., maker of the NATRELLE™ Collection of breast implants.

  2. Susanne Slavinski Says:

There is a point where they become too big. I am a 32D and it does not make it hard to have sex, but I could see anything over an F being too big.

  3. Annmarie Eacret Says:

I don’t hate them but I wonder why some women would want to sign themselves up for a lifetime of operations to replace the implants every five years or so just so they can go up a cup size or two. I also wonder what these women will do when big breasts go out of style again.

  4. Jazmin Bacino Says:

if i was in your shoes i would get them i was a c cup and they just started to sag down i looked like i was 40 so i got mine done now im a small d an i ve never been happier

  5. Lonnie Esau Says:

    they need vaginal stretching.

  6. Amado Kratchman Says:

    whimp

  7. Olen Mckinnell Says:

remember you are beautiful just the way you are now.getting a bigger size does not change you. your Brest are a part of you, why change you.

  8. Sharyn Buckwalter Says:

well being a beauty enhancer anything that women back then to attract a man’s attention could be about the same thing. If it is such a temptation, you should separate your self from it until you are stronger.

  9. Lesley Seip Says:

I dont know about other people but in my opinion —- if I could afford them I would probaly go for it. I wouldn’t have massive melons or anything though. I would probaly go for a 36 C.

  10. Tristan Byczek Says:

that is soo mean. she will break up with you if you say anything that has to do with her having flat breasts. if you can get her to say it without hinting that you can suggest it. be really careful though and dont force her. that would be mean.

  11. Bridgett Loterbauer Says:

um because she is 10…..seriously her body hasn’t reached full maturity so her breast tissue will be growing up until she gets her first menses. So who knows she just may have bigger breasts then she thought. I would wait until after she receives her menstrual cycle.

  12. Erik Lanctot Says:

no, u cant figure out how ur breasts will look with implants truly even with cutlets because its ur body anatomy inside and out that determines how they will look and hold up, where they will settle, how big ur aureoles will get…etc. to have the best outcome for a breast augmentation surgery, u want to start a work out routine for ur chest area and ur arms and stomach mainly as well as a good cardio routine about 3 months before. u want ur muscles to be in shape, u want ur healing to be good, and circulation is one key element to healing and exercise does that…u also want to kick bad habits like smoking and drinking…anything really that hinders ur health as that will slow ur healing process and as a result may affect other things that are a bit more critical like waking up, blood loss, u get it…to have perky boobs, u have to have the muscle to keep those girls up and looking firm fake or not…if ya do that you will probably be a great candidate to go in through the belly button so that there is no scaring…if u speak with a professional and certified surgeon for this type of cosmetic procedure…which u should look up by the way, they will give u silicone or saline implants that u can place in ur bra to try out the sizes.

  13. Claudine Balmos Says:

ive heard hanging upside-down does. haha. but seriously, erm well. i dont really worry bout this stuff. mainly cuz i dont have to. haha. but i ususally kinda complain about being bigger. because you cant wear as many things as girls who are like an A or B. idk..maybe try to be thankful for what you have? but padded bras are pretty much the only [safe] way to go i think. sorry.

  14. Travis Klavetter Says:

Stick to what God gave you

  15. Lettie Mellie Says:

if it did pop… it would not come out your nipple… so they baby would not drink it

  16. Samuel Rael Says:

I’ve had my implants for three years now and I LOVE them. Of course, there is risk with everything we do. Fortunately, my surgery went off without a hitch and my body has not rejected them. When you research the dangers/side effects, make sure the statistical breakdown is also listed. Only then will you see how small the percentage is of adverse things, i.e capsular contracture, fatal allergies to the silicone casing, etc. actually happening. At first, they do feel very heavy on your chest, especially if you have small breasts. But after time, you don’t feel the weight at all. You can also feel them move if you bend over to pick up something, etc. But trust me, that alone has not made me wish I hadn’t gotten them. I’d do it over and over again. My only regret is that I didn’t get them bigger! :-D

  17. Bennie Mulinix Says:

You got the carpel tunnel? Aw . . . .

  18. Alyson Siebeneck Says:

hahahaha i love the outrage this question caused…

  19. Ross Ares Says:

i wouldn’t mind being bigger, but i am what i am and that’s who i love. and i don’t want some foreign body living inside of me – i’m betting soon the "safe" implants will be found to be not so safe.

  20. Beau Colle Says:

they feel wired and after the surgery you cant lift your hands for ages, even to flush the toilet, heaps of my friends have have them done because they are exotic dancers and the only reason they got them done is to make more money. she wont be able to do much for at least 3months and she may end up with a horrible scar depending how good the doctor is and where shes getting the inserted.

  21. Carri Blondin Says:

Implants feel fake. I prefer the real thing; nice soft and firm,

  22. Travis Klavetter Says:

    Neither?

  23. Eun Moua Says:

If that were the case, they should have to ban false eyelashes and makeup as well. Although I think they should have to compete using their natural beauty, if they ALL get implants, it’s not really an advantage for any of them, only for the guys who are watching the pageant.

  24. Denny Suitt Says:

Why do Dog lovers never cease to amaze me….

  25. Tarsha Lindy Says:

First of all… with your other questions I am just wondering… are you a man or woman?? And when did you finally get the baby your homo boyfriend didn’t know you wanted???

  26. Kristan Gabrielli Says:

My fiance is 30 and he loves my beauty and encourages me to improve it. He thinks nothing of my wonderful 32D enhanced breasts.

  27. Kasandra Marchizano Says:

With your size, I think 34B is prefect. You don’t need to get a breast implant at all. However, If you really want to get it anyway. I think C is OK. because your body figure is small, you should not get higher than C.

  28. Eldon Minney Says:

dont get either!!! First of all a C is big!! If you get any larger im sure your boobs will not fit your body! And when you become a mom you don’t want to have these big jugs! [ur boobs also get bigger when ur pregnant so imagine....D implants & pregant? ur boobs will be huge & not attractive.] Also, i was thinking about getting a nose job, however, you should think about the risks. First off, a lot of times you wont like your new nose! And theres no replacing it…second you should be happy who you are…i used to hate my nose because it is a little pointy but everyone says that is my best feature. So good luck & please dont change ur apperance! im sure ur beautiful

  29. Dillon Louissant Says:

Any thing is possable, but why would they want to do it?

  30. Cliff Fore Says:

they might and might not cover it (considered a beauty issue) but if you go to the right doctor you can get breast implants for 4000 but if you explain whats happened and that you dont have alot of money they willl help you out

  31. Grover Lazott Says:

well i have them. I was flat all my life and was also told I would grow, which was a lie. I was 19 when I got my implants and just went to a small b cup. I didn’t was people to look at me and say "oh she has fake boobs". I just wanted to feel more girly, which I now do. Its a personal experience for each girl that wants to improve themselves. Girls get new clothes, makeup, dye their hair, all to look better, so why not.

  32. Homer Swales Says:

umm..sorry i wouldnt know the answer to this..and thanks for sharing about the last part..

  33. Brian Laraia Says:

You CAN’T convince her, she’s not happy with herself & you can’t fix that. Sorry, but that’s the honest no holes barred truth. You CAN however, keep telling her that you think she’s beautiful.

  34. Aide Cominotti Says:

Breast implants i think are more rounded and firmer I think real are better but like you said its your life your choice. Goodluck whatever you choose .
